Laparoscopic Surgeries

Laparoscopic Surgeries

Laparoscopic surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery, is a specialized technique that uses small incisions for abdominal and pelvic procedures. This technique has become increasingly popular over the past decade, expanding beyond gynecology and gallbladder surgery to include intestinal surgeries.

Traditional open surgery involves a single, large incision to access the abdomen. In contrast, laparoscopic surgery utilizes several small incisions (usually 0.5-1cm) called “ports.” Through these ports, thin tubes called trocars are inserted. Specialized instruments and a miniature camera, known as a laparoscope, are then passed through the trocars during the procedure.

To create a clear view and working space, the surgeon inflates the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas at the beginning of the surgery. The laparoscope transmits high-resolution images from inside the abdomen to video monitors in the operating room. This allows the surgeon to perform the same procedures as traditional surgery, but with significantly smaller incisions.
